Chapter 20

Drake

I understand exactly what Clara meant when she said being in a house would be so much better that the underground shelter. So much better. The morning sun pierced through the window, waking me up. Instead of wrapping myself up in the covers, I go over to the window and open it.

Remus would hate it. He’s sleeping in the main room on the couch, allowing Clara and me to get the two small rooms, which serve the function of bedrooms. Only, they look more like storage lockers, with barely enough room for just one bed and a small wardrobe. I guess, you don’t really need more than that.

I put on a t-shirt and some sweatpants, then slowly walk out of the room, and towards the kitchen. On the way there, I pass by Clara’s room. The door is ajar, and I can’t resist the urge to take a peek. Listening whether Remus is up, I press my face to the edge of the door. The whole house is silent.

Clara is still asleep. There is a light cover over her. Her window is closed, but the curtains are apart, and a veil of morning sunlight is oozing onto her skin. Her chocolate curls lay spread on the pillow behind her head. Her milky white neck is revealed, and I have to use all my conscious effort not to tiptoe inside and press my lips to the hollow at the base of her neck. That familiar heat immediately rises inside of me, and I become restless.

She is the perfect choice. I couldn’t agree more with Remus. Only… she was. Not anymore.

She stirs in her sleep, and I freeze. If she opens her eyes, she will see me. I wait, and she moves restlessly, as if she’s dreaming of something, or someone. The cover slips off of her upper body, covering only her legs. Her t-shirt is pulled tightly over her breasts, which rise and fall gently, in rhythm with her breathing.

I watch the hard pebbles of her nipples protrude from the thin fabric of her t-shirt. The dragon inside of me erupts in desire. The need to protect her is overpowering. I don’t ever want to leave her side. I watch her possessively, wondering how come I feel this way about someone I’ve known for so little time.

My gaze traces the curves of her lips, the lines of her slumbering face, the shadowed part of her neck. She is ours. She doesn’t even know it yet, but she is. That determined will to survive, that defiance in the face of all adversity, that is what I fell in love with. The fact that she is stunning and absolutely beautiful is just an extra.

My dragon has awakened just by looking at her. The primal need in me is strong. Stronger than I’ve ever felt it before. I want to claim her, just like I know Remus wants. But, we would never do it without her consent. Never.

But, the call of the mating bond is getting stronger.
